What Flags Do Cruise Ships Fly?

The ensign, the courtesy flag and the house flag — and each line’s usual registry.

Stand on the pier and look at the back of your ship: under its name is a port, such as Nassau, Valletta, Hamilton or Panama. That is the answer to what flags cruise ships fly — the registry country — and it varies by line. Here is the pattern for the major brands, and what else you will see flying above the decks.

The Three Kinds of Flag on a Cruise Ship

The national ensign

Flown at the stern, it shows the flag state, the country where the ship is registered.

The courtesy flag

Raised on the mast while the ship is in another country’s waters, as a mark of respect to the host nation.

The house flag

The cruise line’s own emblem, flown to show which company operates the ship.

Signal flags may also appear on special occasions, strung from bow to stern in what sailors call “dressing ship.”

These are the usual patterns as of 2026. Registries change, so the stern of your own ship, or your cruise line’s fleet information, is the final word.

When the Flag Shows Up in Your Cruise

Most of the time you will never notice it. A few situations make the registry visible:

  • Weddings at sea. Bermuda and Malta registries allow legally recognized marriages performed by the captain or an officiant at sea, which is part of why Princess, Cunard and Celebrity offer them.
  • Crime and incident reports. The flag state has jurisdiction at sea, and U.S. law adds reporting duties for ships carrying Americans to and from U.S. ports.
  • Itinerary rules. Only the U.S.-flagged Pride of America can sail its all-Hawaii route; foreign-flag ships add a foreign call.

Does a Flag Make One Ship Safer Than Another?

Not in any simple way. The large registries used by cruise lines all apply the same international conventions, and passenger ships calling at U.S. ports face Coast Guard examinations on top of their flag state’s surveys. What makes a difference to your experience is the ship’s size, age and style — things our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise compare for you. For general cruise safety questions, Cruising Is Safe answers them calmly, and the Official Cruise Directory lists every line we sell. Cruise Ship Flags: Questions

What flags do cruise ships fly?

At the stern, the ensign of the country where the ship is registered. Elsewhere you may see the cruise line’s own house flag and, while in port, a courtesy flag of the country being visited.

Why does my Royal Caribbean ship say Nassau on the back?

Nassau is the port of registry: Royal Caribbean registers its ships in the Bahamas. The name on the stern always shows the registry port, not the homeport you sail from.

Can a cruise ship change its flag?

Yes. Lines re-register ships when it suits their operations, and a ship sold to a new owner often changes flag. The current registry is always shown on the stern and in official ship records.
